Wir teilen ein Update zur Kampagne #FreeHomayoun vom 09.09.24

In 15 days Homayoun Sabetara’s appeal trial will take place in Thessaloniki. His state of health is worrying. What will happen with the appeal and what can we do until then?

There are three possible outcomes for 24 September: Our biggest concern is that the trial will be postponed again. That would be a great psychological burden, especially for Mahtab and Homayoun. The court has repeatedly found various reasons for this in the past. The second scenario, which we are of course hoping for, is an acquittal for Homayoun. His conviction is based on untenable evidence that will not stand up on appeal. The third scenario is a reduction of the sentence, but not an acquittal. In this case, we will probably take the case to the European Court of Human Rights. “The court’s decision to postpone the trial is torture. Homayoun has collapsed in his cell many times and had to go to hospital, but there have been no further examinations. His health is getting worse. The prison doesn’t allow families to send medication, and the healthcare doesn’t even cover basic medical needs. I’m just relieved he’s still alive,” Mahtab states.

We are now preparing for the trial. On friday, Mahtab and our lawyers were visiting Homayoun in Trikala prison. We are trying to continue to raise awareness of the case by contacting journalists or using social media to show that our demand for an end to the criminalisation of migrants in Greece is widely supported. To this end, we are publishing a solidarity video every day from a different person or group.

And we are planning actions in Thessaloniki, such as an information event on the Sunday before the trial and a rally in front of the court on 24 September.

You can support us: Write something about the case yourself or talk to journalists in your network. Share the solidarity videos on Instagram and Twitter or record your own statement. Come to Thessaloniki to support Homayoun in court. Help us with a donation to cover the costs of the trial and the campaign. “My father should never have been in prison in the first place. No one who simply wants to cross the European border to seek asylum belongs in prison. Yet here we are, with nearly 3,000 people incarcerated in Greece alone.”

In Solidarity,
Mahtab, Kiana, Anne, Afsoon und Hannah

// about Homayoun’s case // Mahtab has been fighting for her father’s freedom for three years. He was wrongly accused of being a smuggler in Greece and sentenced to 18 years. His first trial was on 22 April 2024 and postponed. He is waiting for his next trial on 24 September 2024.
