Every life is worth more than their laws, their walls, and their weapons.

On February 6, 2014, more than 200 people attempted to swim from the Moroccan coast to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. Spanish border police attacked them and violently prevented them from reaching the shore. At least 15 people died and dozens more disappeared. The survivors were illegally pushed back to Morocco. The Tarajal massacre happened in full view of everyone and was caused by a system that is responsible for the disappearance of many people. A system that ignores the families and relatives of the dead and missing.

Since the Tarajal massacre, so-called CommemorActions have been held every February 6. These were initiated by relatives of the dead and missing. They are about collective remembrance as well as the struggle for truth, justice, and compensation. February 6 has now become the “Global Day of Struggle Against the Regime of Death at the Borders.” Many CommemorActions take place internationally on this day.

The Tarajal massacre is one of countless events. Racist state violence kills people on the move and migration routes, in prisons, and on the streets. Their deaths are portrayed as self-inflicted or inevitable. No one is held accountable, and the relatives are not heard or compensated. Europe’s death policies are designed to wipe people out – the victims are not to be seen, found, or identified.

Together with families and allies worldwide, we stand against forgetting, against ignorance, against the normalization of this violence. We refuse to believe that some lives are worth less than others.
